ACR issues white paper
on radiation dose
The American College of Radiology (ACR) of Reston,
VA, has issued a new white paper on the appropriate use of
medical imaging in an effort to counter the documented rise
in radiation being delivered by medical devices.
Produced by the ACR Blue Ribbon Panel on Radiation
Dose in Medicine, the 13-page report examines the rise in
the number of radiation-based imaging examinations in recent
decades, and quotes research on the connection between radiation
dose and cancer. The report is being published in the May
issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology.
The paper makes a number of recommendations, such as the development
of a national database for radiation dose indices that would
enable researchers to more accurately estimate how much radiation
dose is being delivered to patients. The development of such
a database is more feasible thanks to the rise of digital
imaging modalities, from which the data could be extracted,
the paper says.
The report is available on the ACR's Web site, and can be
reached by clicking here

Introducing the AHP consultants network
At-a-glance
- national network of AHP consultants provides
peer support
and networking
- supports consultants in developing practice
and shaping policies
- group is open to new members.
The national network of AHP consultants is expanding
- helping members develop clinical practice and influence
national policies. There are over 80 members of the network,
and more than 50 per cent are physiotherapists. The rest of
the network is made up of radiographers, occupational therapists,
dietitians, podiatrists and speech and language therapists.
Rita Hopkin, Assistant Director of Professional
Modernisation and AHP Lead at NHS East Midlands, explains
the importance of the AHP consultant role: "Consultants
are at the forefront of clinical leadership, pushing forward
the boundaries of professional practice and the research agenda.
They form an integral part of the service modernisation agenda
and are instrumental in improving the delivery of AHP services."
The network enables these leaders to share ideas, offer mutual
support, and collaborate to develop strategies and influence
policies. Membership is voluntary and any AHP consultant can
join, using the contact details below. Links and info For
