CT Colonography: Principles and Practice

22nd and 23rd January 2008 University of Salford

CT Colonography (CTC) is a relatively new technique to examine the large bowel. Research has demonstrated that it is a potential rival to existing bowel imaging techniques. There is much pressure on radiology departments to introduce these procedures, but currently there is little agreement on what constitutes best practice in terms of performing the procedure and interpreting the results. This course provides radiographers and radiologists with the opportunity to engage in peer discussion and to explore best practice in the performing and interpreting of the CTC
examination.

Clinical and Radiological Assessment of Swallowing Disorders

An exciting module aimed at radiographers and speech and language therapists involved in the assessment of swallowing disorders

Are you a radiographer or speech and language therapist who is already involved in the radiological assessment of swallowing disorders, or who wishes to develop your role in videofluoroscopy and/or barium swallow investigation?

If so, this 30 credit Masters Level module offered by the School of Health Care Professions at the University of Salford may be what you are looking for.

The module lasts 1 semester (approx 5 months), and explores evidence based practice in videofluoroscopy and conventional swallowing studies.

It is open to both radiographers and speech and language therapists, and is delivered by an experienced inter-disciplinary team including radiologists, radiographers, speech therapists, clinical physiologists and other health professionals. Assessment is by a clinical portfolio of evidence which is tailored to the individual learning needs of the practitioner.

Students attend academic blocks as shown below, and have clinical training if necessary in their base hospital. The dates of attendance for the next intake are :

Tuesday 4th – Friday 7th September 2007
Tuesday 6th – Friday 9th November 2007
Tuesday 8th – Wednesday 9th January 2008

The module may be studied alone or may be combined with other optional modules on the MSc Professional Development or MSc Advanced Practice (Gastrointestinal Imaging) programmes to offer the opportunity for practitioners to gain a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Master of Science degree.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate competence in the procedural management of standard and modified barium swallows and/or videofluroscopy for a range of clinical signs and symptoms

Discuss and apply to the practice situation an in-depth understanding of the anatomy, physiology and patho-physiology of the upper GI Tract (mouth, pharynx and oesophagus)

Critically review and demonstrate an advanced understanding of pathology, its associated clinical signs and symptoms, the radiological appearances, and tailor them accordingly

Critically review and appraise the clinical and radiological findings of the investigation, and communicate this effectively within an agreed proforma report

Critically appraise the suitability of alternative diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for a range of pathologies and clinical signs and take responsibility for referral to alternative investigations where appropriate (liaising with consultant radiologists)

Develop and implement inter-disciplinary clinical audit to ensure the continuing effectiveness of the practitioner-led swallowing service

Assessment

You will present a clinical portfolio of evidence which is tailored to the individual practitioner’s requirements. This portfolio includes a reflective log of 30 cases (minimum), as well as a range of evidence to demonstrate the learning outcomes have been met. The student will need the support of their service manager and a clinical mentor to complete the clinical training requirements.
